If you are ready to take your nursing career to the next level, then earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree by enrolling in an online RN to BSN program may be your next step. Online programs offer flexible scheduling and affordability, and a number of nursing grants, scholarships and other sources are available.
Funding Your Dreams
- FAFSA: Step one is to fill out the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All students interested in financial aid for college need to complete the FAFSA, which estimates how much and what types of financial aid for which they qualify. The USDE provides more than $150 billion annually in grants, loans, and work-study funds to students in college or career school. To quickly determine your eligibility, check out this USDE infographic.
- Grants and Scholarships: Next, apply for all the free money you can get. Nursingscholarship.us is a helpful resource for nursing grants as well as public and private nursing scholarships. According to the site, one of the most popular programs for nursing students is the NURSE Corps Scholarship Program, provided by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. Students receive funding to cover their educational costs in exchange for working at an eligible NURSE Corps site upon graduation. NURSE Corps sites are generally in urban, rural and frontier communities that have inadequate access to healthcare.
- Loans: Based on the results of your FAFSA, you may be eligible for various types of federal loans, including subsidized, unsubsidized, PLUS or Perkins. NURSE Corps also has a loan repayment program that offers a percentage of your qualifying student loan in exchange for a two- or three-year service commitment.
- Employer tuition reimbursement: Some employers will actually pay for your tuition, books and other educational costs if you earn a B or better in each course. Check with a human resources representative to see if this benefit is available to you, if there is a cap on their contribution, and which degrees their tuition reimbursement plan covers.
